Carved by the Songye people of Democratic Republic of Congo. This traditional Songye shield is known by their decorative patterns and repetition of forms. They were used obviously as a defensive weapon, as well as a decorative item and ritual mask and has a lot of symbolic meaning. The shield is carved from a single piece of wood and has a fine relief with polychrome hues.
