The Penan people are traditionally nomadic hunter-gatherers, inhabiting the deep jungles of Borneo. Despite their nomadic lifestyle, they are excellent craftsmen. The men are expert blacksmiths and blowpipe makers, whilst the women produce exquisite baskets and rattan mats, regarded as the finest in Borneo.
This particular mat was traditionally used as sleeping mats and also for sitting. Weaved beautifully from rattan strands with broad borders rows of their traditional motifs and the central panel is weaved in motif known as herringbone pattern. The colours are of natural dyes. Aged approximately 30 years old or more.
