Originated from DR of Congo. Lega masks are usually carved in a distinctive style, with a heart-shaped concave face, slightly protruding forehead and a narrow nose. The faces of the masks are rubbed with white clay (pembe) each time they are used and thereby acquire the white patina that colours the face and enhances the various decorative designs.
They are used to represent levels of seniority and authority. For the Lega, the ultimate goal is to reach the uppermost level of Bwami where one would be recognized as a Kindi, a leader and also a moral and social authority to be honoured with the right to wear or carry certain masks.
