This item is a wooden stopper that was used to plugged into the opening of a Naga Morsarang, a container which is used to store medicine in the culture of Toba Batak people of North Sumatra, Indonesia. As a container of a powerful potion, they always extensively decorated with complex patterns, that includes this stopper. This stopper in particular carved in shape of lizard Boraspati Ni Tano (one of characters from Toba Batak mythology) and a human figure sitting on it. The lizard represents the earth deity Boraspati Ni spirits, which they believed could influence the fate of the living. It’s a shame that the rest of the medicine container had gone missing, hence the stopper alone had been turned into a beautiful piece of collection on it’s own.
