This mask was carved by the Kwele people of Gabon. They strongly believe in witchcraft & perform ‘beete’ ritual to protect themselves against all the negative influences in their daily life. Kwele masks represent the antelope whose flesh was eaten at the end of the ‘beete’ ritual.
As there are no evidence of age or use, this mask was probably made to be sold.
